Infant formula manufacturers welcome Pru Goward

- Women deserve to know what's best for their babies -

The appointment of high profile Australian Pru Goward to Chair of the Government's infant formula advisory group will raise awareness and discussion around the important issue of infant nutrition, Chair of IFMAA (Infant Formula Manufacturers' Association of Australia), Peter Kelly, said today.

The Parliamentary Secretary for Health and Aging Chris Pyne has announced that Ms Goward would Chair the APMAIF (Advisory Panel on the Marketing of in Australia of Infant Formula).

"Decisions about feeding options - particularly for babies - are not taken lightly by parents and it is important that they have access to information about all of the options," Mr Kelly said.

"There is no doubt that breast milk provides the optimal diet for infants. However there are parents who - for a variety of reasons - cannot, or choose not to, breastfeed their babies. For various reasons, including the way some health workers interpret the MAIF Agreement these parents often have very little access to information about infant formula.

"Ensuring parents have access to accurate and timely information about all feeding options - including infant formula - should be a priority for all groups involved in the provision of child nutrition going forward," Mr Kelly said.
