Current research and development projects underway at Wyeth
At any one time Wyeth is engaged in multiple research and development projects to ensure that we stay on top of the latest in medical innovation. Current areas of research include:
Tackling infectious disease
Wyeth is one of the few companies that is investing heavily in research and development in the area of infectious disease and resistance by working to discover and develop novel therapies and vaccines. While the numbers of infections rise and antibiotic resistance increases, our ability to discover and develop new antibiotics has significantly declined, with very few treatments in the pipeline and fewer companies working in the field.
Biologics, Rheumatoid arthritis and Ankylosing Spondylitis
In recent years Wyeth has been working on the development of a new form of medication known as Biologic Response Modifiers or ‘Biologics'. Biologics work by blocking some of the hormones associated with inflammation. They can help reduce pain and prevent further damage to arthritic joints.
In the broad area of Rheumatology Wyeth is doing important research to ensure that patients receive the best possible care. The current studies being undertaken across the country include those into Rheumatoid Arthritis treatment and Ankylosing Spondylitis, a painful progressive rheumatic disease that affects mainly the spine.
Managing Psoriasis and the study of dermatology
Notoriously difficult to treat, Psoriasis affects approximately 2% of the population and because of its unsightly nature can be extremely damaging to patients' physical and psychological wellbeing. Over the years Wyeth has invested heavily in research and development designed to evaluate new therapeutic options for the treatment of Psoriasis.
Supporting renal transplant patients
Wyeth Australia is currently conducting research and development aimed at identifying ways to support renal transplant patients. This research in the area of immunosuppressants is focused on drug treatments and other related medical areas.
Early research and drug development
Wyeth Australia also conducts early research, exploring the medical capabilities of new molecules for medical treatment. Wyeth Research is currently working on eleven different molecules spanning over twenty-five different clinical trials in Australia, New Zealand and Asia. Therapeutic areas include: rheumatoid arthritis, oncology, solid organ transplantation, osteoporosis, anti-infectives, CNS, neurology, haematology, women's health and vaccines.
